“Why are you doing this?” “What difference will it make?” These are questions the staff of Sports Outreach is often asked after people first hear of the effort to build the Sports Outreach Resource Center (SORC) in Uganda. Our answer is simple and straightforward—the purpose of the SORC is “to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.” (Ephesians 4:12)
Part of the mission of Sports Outreach is to train Christian leaders in the effective use of sports ministry for the purpose of sharing the Gospel and alleviate human suffering. This, too, is the vision of the Sports Outreach Resource Center, which will serve as the heart of Sports Outreach’s activities in Africa. Even as we are only in the second of the three phases of construction, the Center is already making a difference. Young chess players will soon be training at the Chess Academy and Mentoring Center, which will, in the future, host local and international chess tournaments. Soccer and basketball games are being played at the newly completed sports complex. Here individuals and teams are also being taught how to spread the love of Jesus Christ so that they can share in the work of restoring hope and transforming lives. Abandoned children, who formerly lived on the streets in the slums of Kampala, will soon be living in the four completed Children’s Homes.
Ground was broken last month on the Chapel and Multi-Purpose building. This key component of the Center was fully funded before soaring inflation rates hit Uganda. This building will house an area for worship, teaching, and training, and will double as a dining hall. Uganda’s high inflation rate has negatively impacted the original budget and now an additional $40,000 is needed to complete the Chess Academy and Chapel. This immediate financial shortfall must be met in order to keep the project on schedule. With your timely donation to this portion of the Center, we can dedicate these buildings in the fall of 2016!
At this time we are also seeking support for the completion of Phase Three. The four remaining Children’s Homes to be constructed during this phase are already fully funded, but your help is needed to complete the Medical Clinic ($53,250), Administration Building ($115,650) and Guest House ($450,000). We realize these are large sums of money in earthly terms, but when you focus on the eternal impact the SORC will have in the lives of people, the value is immeasurable.
This month please prayerfully consider making a financial donation in support of the Sports Outreach Resource Center. Every dollar will not only affect the lives of people whom Sports Outreach currently serves, but will also affect generations to come. Together we can continue the work that God has called us to – “Restoring Hope and Transforming Lives!” Please visit our website for more detailed information on the Sports Outreach Resource Center.
