Unto One of the Least of These

Shannel, Lavinia, Peter, Polycarp, Vane, Anita, are just a few of the names of children living in Mukuru Slum in Nairobi, Kenya, who are now receiving at least one meal per day through Sports Outreach feeding initiatives. In Kenya, nearly 2,000 children are fed a daily portion of porridge, rice, or beans, but these are the fortunate ones. Thousands more wonder where their next meal will come from and with rampant unemployment and chronic poverty, there are no guarantees. Clean water, raw ingredients, and cooking firewood are increasingly expensive, but with a one-time or monthly donation of any amount, a child can be provided with at least one meal a day for as little as 10 cents!

Through the help of caring people such as yourself, many meals can be provided for children not only in Nairobi but in Kampala and Gulu, Uganda as well. Food and water are certainly needs that must be met on a daily basis, and a generous gift would go a long way to being able to answer the rumbling cries of hungry stomachs!

Dr. Samuel Mayanja shares about disease prevention

Similar needs exist in the realm of public health! Diseases and injuries occur on a daily basis, but too often—in the desperately poor places where Sports Outreach ministers—medicines and medical supplies are simply not available. Education aimed at disease prevention and first aid are occurring; in fact, SOM chess pioneer-turned-medical doctor, Samuel Mayanja, recently facilitated a public health seminar at the SORC (Sports Outreach Resource Center) near Kampala, Uganda. Precipitated by an outbreak of cholera in some slum areas, the people attending were taught how to improve personal hygiene and general cleanliness in and around their homes.

Patients being seen at a medical clinic

As with Sports Outreach feeding initiatives, public health programs require a continuous flow of funding. Would you consider a monthly or one-time donation to defray costs of medical equipment, first aid resource, or antibiotics? It is through practical ways such as food and medicine that people often get their first glimpse of the care that God has for them. As they experience God’s love for them, hope can begin to be restored and opportunities for further relationships can be developed, leading to transformed lives
