SERVE - Students Engagedin Responsible Volunteer Experiences

Through its SERVE program, Lynchburg College strongly encourages its students to become involved in programs and projects that can make a difference in people's lives.

Mission: To assist the students, faculty, and staff of Lynchburg College in connecting with campus, community, and global volunteer experiences that interest and encourage them to engage in lifelong service learning that will affect them and their community.

The partnership with Lynchburg College and Sports Outreach includes fund-raisers such as Water for Life runs and also sending teams to work hand-in-hand with our ministry in Gulu, Northern Uganda. Dr. Todd Olsen, associate professor of health and education and women's soccer coach at LC took a team there this past year.

Stategies For Life

Lynchburg College is partnering with Sports Outreach, and other organizations, and is providings its students with unique ways to become involved. Through their Strategies For Life program (click link for more info) they are helping meet needs in Uganda and Haiti. LC will be sending a team to Gulu, northern Uganda in May to work with Sports Outreach.

During the week of March 28 - April 2, 2011, LC and SOI will again be teaming up with other local agencies to raise awaremess of local and global water issues. Funds will be raised for clean sources of drinking water in Uganda and Haiti. A unique schedule of events will include lectures, community service projects, games, movies and a special day of community outreach, sports ministry, education and fellowship on Saturday, April 2. 4th Annual Water for Life 2011
5k & Children's Fun Run

The Fourth Annual Gifts for Gulu, ‘Water For Life’ race was held Saturday, March 12, 2011 at LynchburgCollege. In addition to a 5K run and walk there were three divisions of children’s runsaround the beautifulLynchburg College Dell. Each child participating in the run received a special gift made by children in Uganda.

The Water for Life runs have become very successful. All proceeds from this event help provide clean drinking water sources for people in Northern Uganda. In three years the Lynchburg running community has contributed four wells and over $25,000 of gifts in kind!

Another running event, “Running for Anna” 5K, was held prior to this event for students who would not be availabe to run in the "Water For Life" event because of spring break. This event brought out almost 200 students (read more).

LC Professor and Soccer Coach Todd Olsen is the person who has been the driving force in the partnership with SOI. He was recently featured in the NCAA Champion Magazine. Read the article here >>
