In 2009 Sports Outreach in conjunction with Lynchburg College began teaching the Sports Outreach Africa staff Community-Based Health Education. Todd Olsen, Ph.D. and MPH developed the unique training materials used in these international sites. He has taken his Lynchburg College “travel abroad” students to Uganda and Kenya numerous times to train the Sports Outreach staff in public health, how to teach others public health, and how to incorporated soccer training skills with public health facts to pass on to the younger generation where Sports Outreach serves.
Sports Outreach staff members have proudly earned Lynchburg College Community Based Health certificates. In Nairobi, Kenya the classes have been opened to HIV positive women in order to educate, encourage and restore hope. The HIV positive women have gone on to study the Bible together and share their love for the Lord to show others that with Christ they can overcome sickness, disease, and hopelessness.
Sports Outreach also facilitates medical clinic outreaches on a regular basis. In February 2015 Sports Outreach partnered with Bless Back Worldwide to offer medical clinics in Gulu and Kampala. Two thousand people were served in during a 13 day Sports Outreach vision/mission trip. The Sports Outreach Uganda staff were valuable assets to this team in prayer, practical support and follow up largely because of their prior community-based health education background.
