Projects - Training

Practical job and life skill training takes place weekly by SOI staff within the communities we are serving with the hope of creating sustainable income for families. The programs include brick making, sewing, farming, baking, mechanics, and jewelry making.

The goal is for these individuals to become empowered as they learn a new trade. Additionally SOI provides micro-business loans to participants of the vocational training programs, further growing confidence as these men and women begin their own businesses.

One example of a training focused project is the Koro Farm located just outside of Gulu, Uganda. Koro Farm serves as a 33-acre teaching farm where the people of Gulu can come to learn practical farming and animal care skills.

Other vocational training programs at the farm include a bakery, goat keeping, and a piggery. Through involvement on the farm, local people are building independence and establishing healthy communities.

Another example In Charlotte, NC is the Create Project. Through partnerships several refugees and immigrants have been taught how to sew products such as bags, purses, and wallets from woven vinyl - the material comes from old billboards and banners no longer being used.  These men and women are trained workers, now contributing income to their family and growing in confidence and dignity as they learn new skills that can translate to many different businesses.
