Volunteer Locally

Summer Sports Ministry Internship (Summer 2018)

Each summer, Sports Outreach recruits and trains a team of college-aged interns in sports ministry. The internship program is 6 weeks long and includes an intensive week of sports ministry training, as well as 5 weeks of hands-on experience as coaches at our soccer and multi-sports camps. The application is still open, and we are looking for men and women who love God, love sports, and want to grow in their understanding of how these two things can come together to glorify God. Please contact Kendall Alvey (kalvey@sportsoutreach.net) if interested.

Soccer Club (Fall 2017)

Sports Outreach’s fall soccer club is a Christ-centered program for kids across our city (grades K-5th). We openly invite children from local communities and churches to participate in skills training, scrimmages and a half-time devotional each club meeting. Typical time commitment is 2.5 hours per week. We are looking for volunteers who love kids and possess soccer knowledge. Past coaching or playing experience are preferred but not required.

Chess Program (Fall 2017)

We are currently running chess classes at three local elementary schools (Bass Elementary, Heritage Elementary and Dearington Elementary for Science and Innovation), and we need coaches and mentors! Classes are focused on foundational chess skills, life skills, and developing relationships. The minimum weekly time commitment is 1.5 hours, with the option of volunteering for up to 4 hours per week. *We prefer volunteers who have a strong knowledge of the game of chess and a passion for children.

Basketball Club (Fall 2017)

Sports Outreach’s fall basketball club is a Christ-centered basketball program for boys across the city of Lynchburg in Grades 3-5. The club will resume in the fall of 2017, and we are looking for committed volunteer coaches. The minimum time commitment is 2 hours per week. Preference is given to coaches with a strong basketball knowledge and coaching experience, but the only true requirement is a desire to share Christ with, and build relationships with the players and families.

Discipleship (Fall 2017)

As God has built relationships between our staff/volunteers and youth and families, the need for committed, intentional discipleship has become apparent. We are currently in the process of developing a structure that will effectively train volunteers in the process of disciple-making, connect them to youth from our programs who are new or young in their faith, and empower both youth and committed volunteers to work out what it means to follow Christ together. We are looking for mature Christian men who have a passion for mentoring and disciple-making. The weekly time commitment is TBD. Sports interest is not necessary.

Administrative Support (Year-Round)

We are always looking for volunteers who are interested in serving our ministry in an administrative and/or operational capacity. There are a variety of tasks and projects for which we could use assistance! The time commitment is flexible and can be determined on an individual basis.

Administrative Support for Outreach Trip Coordinator (Year-Round)

Our Outreach Trip Coordinator needs administrative and operational support with trip planning and preparation. Tasks will vary day to day but can include data entry, pre-trip departure material preparation, packing bags, updating trip materials, and other special projects. The time commitment is flexible and can be determined on an individual basis. Please contact Catherine Adams (cadams@sportsoutreach.net) for more information.

***All volunteers must pass a background check prior to serving.

Awareness Events/Golf Outings/Partner Help

Help us to help you bring Sports Outreach to your church, small group, club or organization. Awareness events require lots of volunteers to be successful and are a great way to spread the word. There is even an annual golf outing in Portland, OR that could use volunteers. Also, Sports Outreach has key partners that need volunteers — their success directly impacts ours!

Office Work

Each month Sports Outreach prints and stuffs over 4,000 newsletters to keep our friends and partners informed, this is a good time to try us out! Other times it would be nice to have some extra help answering the phone or receiving guests and packages while admin staff is busy or out of the office.
