Today El Salvador experiences some of the highest murder rates in Latin America; it is also considered an epicenter of gang activity throughout the world. In response to this the government has set up countless programs to try and guide youth away from gang membership; so far its efforts have not succeeded. Sports Outreach believes that Christian discipleship and empowerment opportunities for individuals are the only way to change this!

Nairobi, Kenya

Nairobi is Kenya’s capital and largest city, with a population of approximately three million. A sizable percentage of the population live in desperate situations in slum areas that lack most of the basic elements we consider a normal part of life – clean water, electricity, health services, etc. Sports Outreach ministers primarily in the Mukuru slum seeking to restore hope and transform lives through several projects.

Sports Outreach in Ometepec, Mexico is a multifaceted ministry with an approach to sharing the love of Christ in the Costa Chica region of Mexico. Tim and Barb Wood direct and oversee all ministry projects, they work hard to bring opportunities for building relationships within the community, which foster openness for sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Gulu, Uganda

The major ministry in Gulu is the Good News Community Center at Koro Training Farm, established in 2005. Through involvement on the farm, people are growing in their independence and contributing to building healthy communities in which they live. The Good News Community Center is also home to the New Foundations Community Church, which provides spiritual development as well as one-on-one discipleship training.

Kampala, Uganda

The “Good News Football Club” (GNFC) is a group of highly trained young men who are committed to bringing hope into five major slums in Kampala each day. Using soccer and chess as platforms to build relationships and enter unreached communities, these men have spread the Gospel message to thousands of people in need. Their ministry is to the poorest of the poor, street children, HIV+ mothers, and those who have lost hope.

Community Lynchburg

In 2010, Kendall and Dominic Alvey travelled to Uganda to serve as interns alongside Sports Outreach’s international staff. They envisioned themselves staying there forever, but three months after beginning their internship, they returned home to Lynchburg with the goal of taking what they’d learned and launching a local ministry. Our local ministry emphasizes relationship and discipleship as we partner with the local church to reach our city with the transforming power of Jesus Christ.
