HUNGRY GIRL: Phiona Mutesi

Phiona Mutesi, from Uganda’s Katwe slum in Kampala, is currently in her third year at Northwest University in Washington state.

DEDICATED COACH:  Robert Katende

Robert Katende, who began the chess program in an empty church in a Katwe slum in 2005, now leads out in chess initiatives globally, facilitates the Katwe Chess Academy, and advocates internationally for transformation through chess.


Thousands of lives have been transformed through the game of chess, including outreach to the differently-abled community.
