Savings Group Sharing the Gospel in Practical Ways

Our national leaders are constantly keeping up with opportunities and options for helping the families of the children who are involved in their programs. Recently, SOM Uganda has organized two different community savings groups - one in the Katwe slum and the other (pictured here) at the Sports Outreach Resource Center outside Kampala. The Katwe program has membership of 43 people, and the one at the SORC has around 15. These programs, which are in the process of becoming registered as Community Based Organizations, have tried and true processes for encouraging people to save, providing opportunities to give and receive loans, and generally helping poor families become more savvy with their money. The amounts are tiny by our standards - each week, a typical member may save only two or three dollars. But more important than the amount is the habits for wise stewardship of money that the groups develop.

Programs like this open doors to sharing the Gospel, as families in the communities where we do ministry are helped in such practical ways.
